Ferias 2021: a strange day on the beach, 21 August 2021

It was a lovely day weather-wise, but although we went to the beach there wasn't an opportunity to go into the water. 

We began receiving news from early morning sunbathers that something strange was happening on the beach. Thousands of dead carapão, a fish like a large sardine, were being washed up on the beach.

When we arrived, around 2pn, most of the dead fish had been gobbled up by the flocks of gulls on the beach, or reclaimed by the sea, but there were still many left and the gulls had a feast for much of the afternoon. 

The reason for the sudden death of so many fish remains unknown, but the event was reported on the evening news and the waters confirmed as safe by the authorities. We're relieved that tomorrow we can go back in the water.
